Indian Coal Mines- Country’s Drawing Source of Income
India is the world’s second-largest coal producer after China. Since 1774, the coal in India has been mined. According to the statista, at the end of the fiscal year 2024, the revenue generated by Coal India Limited was around 1,502.93 billion INR.
Coal India Limited (CIL) states that, by April 1, 2020, operated 352 mines, comprising 158 underground, 174 opencast, and 20 mixed mines (See Here).
Additionally, according to the Indian Minerals Yearbook 2021, as of March 31, 2021, a total of 442 coal mines were reported in India (See here).
Around 20% of coal is imported to meet the shortage of domestic supply, and between 70%-75% of coal generates electricity though its share in total power generation capacity has recently fallen below 50%. It is said that the largest coal-producing city, Dhanbad, is the coal capital of India due to its extensive coal mining activities.
